In a significant move, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser unveiled a new approach to Express Entry draws on May 31st. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will now prioritize Express Entry candidates who excel in French language proficiency or possess work experience in key fields such as healthcare, STEM, trades, transport, and agriculture.
This strategic selection was based on insights from the Canadian labor market, where shortages have been identified. IRCC collaborated extensively with partners, provinces, territories, and stakeholders across the nation.
On June 28th, the first-ever category-based Express Entry draw invited 500 healthcare workers to apply for permanent residency, with a second round planned for July 5th for 1,500 more healthcare workers. Another draw on the same date is anticipated for eligible candidates in STEM professions.
The focus on transport occupations is rooted in statistics revealing a doubling of occupation shortages between 2019 and 2021. This sector’s urgency was further validated by a substantial number of stakeholders.
Eligibility for the transport category mandates meeting Express Entry program criteria, possessing at least 6 months of recent work experience in specified occupations, and satisfying all other round-specific requirements.
Transportation occupations encompass ten roles, including aircraft assemblers, truck drivers, air traffic controllers, and more. Invitations will be sent to eligible candidates with top Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores, emphasizing factors like work experience, language abilities, and education.
These category-based draws complement general and program-specific draws, aligning with Canada’s labor market and economic objectives, and continuing the role of CRS scores as a central criterion. This strategic shift aims to bridge labor gaps and support key sectors in Canada’s growth.
