IRCC Targets Transport Workers in Latest Express Entry Draw, Issuing 975 ITAs

Express Entry Draw

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has conducted its second Express Entry draw of the week, specifically inviting 975 candidates working in transportation occupations. These candidates needed a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of at least 430 to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.

This specialized draw comes closely after a general draw on March 12, where 2,850 candidates from various sectors were invited with a minimum CRS score of 525. General draws consider applicants from all Express Entry programs, unlike the latest draw, which focuses on candidates with transportation sector experience.

February was a busy month for Express Entry, with six draws inviting a total of 16,110 candidates. These included draws for French speakers and those in healthcare and agriculture sectors, showcasing IRCC’s strategy to address labor shortages in essential areas through targeted draws.

What Makes Category-Based Selection Draws Unique?

Category-based selection draws allow IRCC to focus on specific job sectors facing labor shortages, by inviting candidates with the needed skills to apply for permanent residency. Introduced in May 2023, this approach has six categories, including healthcare, STEM professions, trades, transport, agriculture, and French proficiency.

These targeted draws have generally required lower CRS scores compared to general draws, providing an advantage for candidates within the specified sectors. For instance, this year’s transport occupation draw required a CRS score of 430, significantly lower than the scores required in general draws.

Understanding Express Entry Express Entry is Canada’s system for managing applications for three key economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program. Candidates submit profiles to be scored based on factors like work experience, education, and language skills. Those with the highest scores are invited to apply for permanent residence.

This system allows Canada to efficiently manage immigration applications, ensuring those with the skills and experience needed by the Canadian economy are prioritized. Candidates who receive an ITA have 60 days to complete their application for permanent residence.
