What Happens When You Return to Canada After Traveling?
Traveling after applying for a work permit extension could result in one of three scenarios upon attempting to re-enter Canada:
- Return as a Visitor: You may be allowed back as a visitor, meaning you cannot work until your extension is approved. Be prepared to show you have sufficient funds for your stay.
- Apply for a New Work Permit at Entry: You might need to apply for a new work permit at the border. It’s unclear if you can work immediately or must wait for the permit to be processed.
- Return as a Worker: If your extension was approved while you were away, you could re-enter as a worker.
Re-entry Requirements for Work Permit Holders
To re-enter Canada, work permit holders need more than just their permit. Depending on where you’re from, you’ll also need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), though neither guarantees re-entry.
Visa-Exempt Countries: If you’re from a visa-exempt country, you’ll need a valid passport and an eTA for air travel. If you’re entering by land or sea, an eTA isn’t necessary. New work permit approvals automatically come with an eTA.
Visa-Required Countries: Those from visa-required countries need a valid visitor visa and work permit. However, you won’t need a visa for direct returns from the US or St. Pierre and Miquelon. If your visa has expired, you’ll need to reapply for a visitor visa for any mode of travel to Canada.
Special eTA Eligibility: Some citizens from visa-required countries get an eTA with their work permit renewal, valid for five years or until the passport expires. This eTA is for air travel only.
Traveling outside Canada after applying for a work permit extension is possible, but it’s crucial to understand the implications for your re-entry status and ensure you meet all requirements to return to Canada, whether as a visitor or worker.
