Spouses, partners, and children of sponsors are eligible for open-work permits

Spouses partners and children of sponsors are eligible for open-work permits

Sponsored spouses, partners, and dependent children applying for family class sponsorship can now get open work permits. The policy, introduced by IRCC in May, aims to support families financially, address labor shortages, and strengthen the economy. This open work permit was initially available only for inland spousal sponsorship but has been extended to applicants outside Canada too.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Principal applicants with accepted permanent residence applications under family class or spousal/common-law partner in Canada.
  • Work permit applicants with a max duration of two years.
  • Subjects of sponsorship application by a Canadian citizen/permanent resident spouse/partner.
  • Sharing the same Canadian address as the sponsor.
  • Holding valid temporary resident status or restoration application.

Additionally, dependent children can also apply for open work permits if they meet similar criteria. These measures reflect IRCC’s commitment to family reunification and strengthening immigration strategies.
